Attorney Robert Ciresi is accused of acting as a middleman for one bribe and helping to set up another. Prosecutors say the bribes went to the former town councilmen in exchange for votes approving zoning changes. Ciresi has denied the charges.
The councilmen -- John Zambarano, Joseph Burchfield and Raymond Douglas III -- and a developer accused of facilitating one of the bribes, Edward Imondi, have pleaded guilty to charges against them in the case.
Ciresi is charged with bribery, extortion and conspiracy. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison on the conspiracy charge. Bribery and extortion carry sentences of up to 10 years and 20 years in prison, respectively.
